Expect the remainder of your Independence Day holiday and most of this week to be hot and unbearable in the bi-state region. The National Weather Service in St. Louis has activated a Heat Advisory Sunday afternoon. It will officially be in effect as of noon Monday, July 4.
High temperatures and high humidity create hazardous conditions with heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees on Monday. In addition, the heat indexes increase from 105 to 110 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The advisory is active in portions of central, south-central, west-central, and southwest Illinois. It is also in effect for portions of northeast, east-central, central, and southeast Missouri.
The official advisory will run through 11 p.m. on Wednesday. However, depending on potential conditions, the advisory could extend to the late hours of Thursday, July 7.
Heat preparedness actions to consider
The National Weather Service in St. Louis is providing some important preparedness actions:
- Drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration and heat stroke are often due to not keeping hydrated in high temperature and high humidity situations, leading to hospitalization.
- Stay in an air-conditioned room.
- Stay out of the sun whenever necessary.
- Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
- Take extra precautions if working or spending time outside.
- Limit strenuous activities to the early morning or late evening hours.
- Know the signs and symptoms of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
- Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing whenever possible.
- OSHA regulations recommend regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
- Anyone overcome by heat should move to a cool and shaded location, while someone calls 911.
