GRAFTON — U.S. Rep. Mary Miller (R-Oakland) visited businesses and became updated on important issues while in Grafton recently.
Grafton mayor Mike Morrow escorted Miller and her husband, state Rep. Chris Miller, on a tour around the city on January 28.
“I had a wonderful day touring Grafton with Mayor Morrow,” she said. “We visited eight small businesses, and I had the opportunity to discuss infrastructure, economic development, and the need to defend affordable energy.”
Miller would first visit Grafton Harbor, meeting founders Joe and Jan DeSherlia on a tour of the facilities. During the tour, they would discuss the importance of the Grafton Ferry to the city’s overall tourism economy.
Morrow gave Miller a briefing about a study grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The study grant on the Port District will examine current ferry operations in an attempt to achieve increased ferry activity.
She would then tour Mosby Woodworks, owned by former mayor Richard Mosby, as well as Knotty by Nature, owned by Dan and Brenda Bechtold. Both business entities work with and sell a wide variety of hand-crafted wood products.
She would make a series of additional stops including the Lighthouse Coffee Shop and Antique Store, Harrison’s Gifts, and The Loading Dock. During this leg of the tour, Loading Dock owner Peter Allen expressed concerns about the high costs of energy.
“Our electric bills have doubled — a real hardship for everyone,” Allen said.
Miller also met and visited with many Grafton residents and our-of-town visitors during lunch at the Grafton Pub. She said that she thoroughly enjoyed the pub’s view of the river.
